The Diversity Research Institute Journal (DRIJ) is soliciting manuscripts for the Fall 2016 inaugural edition. The DRIJ is a venue for business and academic collaboration with aims to advance the knowledge of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. As an open access journal, distinctly, its scope is to impact organizational and business practice by making knowledge and research available within and beyond academic institutions. The DRIJ explores themes that include, but are not limited to: organizational development, corporate governance, talent management, employee engagement, and corporate social responsibility.

The DRIJ welcomes writing with organizational and behavioral orientations from an array of disciplinary backgrounds including business, public administration, sociology, psychology, political science, and anthropology spanning demographic characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and other multicultural studies, as well as diversity based on personality, experiences, and organizational role. In particular, we invite manuscripts that continue a line of scholarly inquiry aiming to address historical concerns with social difference, and that engage with the implications and applications of having an inclusive workplace. We welcome both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. The journal will publish two issues per year, and will be archived and indexed online.

We invite papers that address, but are not limited, to the following questions:

  • What conceptions of “diversity” lie within diversity management practice and organizational development?
  • In what ways and how does diversity practice impact the corporate bottom line?
  • How is diversity impacting the meaning and quality of work?
  • How do or how might everyday work operations within organizations and corporations change as they incorporate diversity?
  • How has incorporating diversity within organizational management changed what, how, and where work gets done?
  • How does diversity practice intersect and diverge from Corporate Social Responsibility discourses and programs?
  • What kinds of pilot programs, metrics, and standards can be conducted to create sustainable diversity practice?
  • What kinds of institutional barriers exist that prevents the advancement of underrepresented groups in corporate leadership? How might this access be managed?
  • How might companies address diversity within talent management, and to what ends?
  • What unique diversity training solutions have been developed to help achieve organization goals for a diverse and inclusive organization?

Submission Guidelines

There are no costs associated with submitting a paper for publication to the Diversity Research Institute (DRI) Journal. If you are submitting a paper to be reviewed by the Editorial Board Members, please make sure you follow the guidelines for submission below. Manuscripts that have been submitted elsewhere must be substantially revised.

Manuscript Length:

  • Academic manuscripts must be between 6,000 and 8,000 words including notes and references.
  • Professional, practice-oriented papers must be between 1,500 and 2,500 words, including notes and references. They must have no more than 10 references, in endnote style.
  • Book Reviews must be between 1,200 and 1,500 words. They must have no more than 3 references, if needed.

The DRI Journal welcomes essays that address historical concerns with social difference, and the methodological implications and applications of having an inclusive workplace.

A paper published by the DRI Journal will meet all of the following criteria:

  1. It bridges theoretical ideas with their applicability in everyday workplaces and/or business practices. We are specifically looking for research that can be a tool for change to an audience concerned with diversity and inclusion in their organizations and institutions.
  2. It demonstrates awareness over the most pressing concerns with diversity and inclusion the workplace.
  3. It offers a clear argument that bridges academic and workplace concerns and to advance diversity and inclusion ideas and initiatives.
  4. Beyond critical, it offers practical sites and areas for diversity and inclusion intervention and change.
  5. It uses qualitative and/or quantitative data to support diversity and inclusion claims.
  6. It offers insightful business strategy and/or workplace operation ideas while being attentive of historic and systemic inequalities.
  7. While a manuscript does not have to be innovative to be considered for publication, it must carefully tie research methods and analytical argumentation to its significance within business and society at large.

Manuscript Format:

1. Manuscript Style
All manuscripts must be submitted in .doc format. Your manuscript must have right justified header with a running title and a page number. Manuscripts should be typed in 12-point font with 1-inch margins (2.54cm) in Times or Times New Roman, and be double-spaced throughout.

2. References & Anonymity
Conform your manuscript, including references, in-text citations, and formatting to APA citation style. All references must be cited in the text, and vice versa. The DRI Journal review process is anonymous. Please refer to your own work in the third person.

3. Use Inclusive Language
Avoid biased language. Do not use “he” or “him” as generic pronouns when a gender is not known. In all such instances change nouns to plural versions and pronouns to “they.”

4. Graphics
All tables and text boxes can be embedded in the text, but images and other graphics must be uploaded as separate files with the submission of your manuscript. These separate files must be titled “IMAGE 1,” “IMAGE 2,” etc. in the order that they appear. In addition, using the corresponding titles indicate image placement in the manuscript as [IMAGE 1], [IMAGE 2], etc.

5. Photos
All submissions should include a photo or graphic that is representative or illuminates an area of the research conducted. Please upload this image separately from the manuscript as WEBPHOTO. If your manuscript is accepted, this graphic will be used to showcase your essay in the DRI Journal online publication.
